What is a frontage road?

A frontage road is a local road that runs parallel to a higher speed, limited access road, such as a highway or a motorway. The purpose of a frontage road is to provide access to the businesses and residences that are located next to the main road without the need of travelling on the main road, which is usually designed for high-speed traffic. It helps prevent traffic congestion by providing a place for vehicles to turn off and on the main road, as well as providing access to adjoining businesses and residential areas. Frontage roads can also be used for emergency vehicles and for access to maintenance vehicles. These roads are typically built at the same level as the main road and are connected to it through interchanges or other access points. Frontage roads are often used in suburban and rural areas where there are limited public transportation options, and where car ownership is high.
